Black Skimmers
The black skimmer is a seabird known for its unique hunting behavior, where it skims the surface of the water with its lower mandible to catch fish.
They have black upperparts and a white underside, with a distinctive red and black bill that is longer on the lower mandible.
Black skimmers are found along the coasts of North and South America, and they are known for their distinctive barking call.
They are also known for their colonial nesting habits, where they gather in large groups to breed on sandy beaches or shorelines. Black skimmers are considered a species of least concern, but their populations are declining due to habitat loss and disturbance.
(Skimmer 9694) Most birds swallow their fish head first. But this baby skimmer knew instinctively to swallow that needlefish tail first.
